Many of you will have heard of Fracking, (known as `Hydraulic
Fracturing') a controversial, extremely polluting technique to
extract shale gas. Some of you will have heard of Coal Bed Methane
extraction, a different technique, which can also include fracking and
which is likely to occur in Somerset in the near future.
Frack Free Somerset (which includes Transition Keynsham) have been
informed that UK Methane are intending to apply for planning permission
for a test drill in the Hicks Gate area of Keynsham.
Frack Free Somerset have organised an open event at Wells Town Hall,
BA5 2SE, on Tues 25th. September - next week. The meeting is Free and
open to all between 7 and 9 pm.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions & listen to speakers both
for and against fracking & coal bed methane extraction and its
potential effects on communities and ecosystems across Somerset.
You will be able to engage with a Director of UK Methane - Gerwyn
Williams. They are the main company currently interested in local
fracking.
The Department for energy and Climate Change is presently considering
the granting of exploration licences to allow for shale gas drilling in
the Mendips.
Hopefully there will also be discussion on clean, green energy
techniques as Frack Free Somerset are keen to promote safe, clean, green
energy to meet Somerset's energy needs.
